The full spec for dchp calls out the ability to change IPs on the fly. I believe that Linux dchp has implemented a subset of features which only sets the IP upon connection. This can make the output of dhclient look a little strange and indeed there are no working leases with Linux. A proper question is, what IP information is in in use. Right click the Network Manager icon in the upper right applet bar and select "Connection Information." You can if you wish ping these IPs to insure they are working.
Just a "heads up" on my situation. I installed a $19 USD ethernet card, and ubuntu automagically found up the card, cable modem and network. Way too cool!

Thats a good move. Linux seems to have issues with several cable modems.
well I finally got ubuntu online in the end it was easy. This modem works on frequencies because it is using the same cable line as cable tv, after getting ubuntu to see the modem all I had to do was change the setting to pal instead of hrc/irc and bang it works
