apt-get install Full Install

Ok here is the problem,
I installed and configured apache2 on my unbuntu box by doing a apt-get install apache2. A few weeks later trying in get SSL working I messed up the config files and I wanted to start fresh so I did a apt-get remove apache2. After that I noticed that the config file were still there so I did a rm -r on the apache2 folder in /etc/ bad idea. Now when I try to do a install it says it installed correctly but all the config files are still missing. So what can I do?

Hi.

Use Synaptic or Adept or aptitude to purge apache2-common. Once done reinstall apache2.

In the future if you need to completely remove a package including config files do not use 'rm -rf </whatever>' - use 'sudo apt-get purge <packagename>'

Another Alternative

Instead of trying to again install only Apache2, have you considered installing the Xampp set of packages? I've had lots of success with them on both Windows and Ubuntu. Here is a link you might find helpful http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html .

BTW, I have no financial association with them at all. They don't even know me. I just like and understand their approach to enabling me to set up and manage a web server.
