AMD Sempron 3300+: Which ISO must I download (i386/amd64)?

Hi.

I've got an "AMD Sempron 3300+" PC where I want to install Ubuntu 8.10:

Browsing this download webpage
http://ftp.stw-bonn.de/ubuntu-cd/intrepid/
I find two different ISO files:
1) ubuntu-8.10-desktop-amd64.iso
2) ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso

Which one is for me? Thank you very much.

Amd64 for 64bit,and i386 for 32.
It looks like the 3300+ is 32bit,using socket 754,judging by the Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sempron

So i would say use the i386 image.

Regards.

hmmm.. From wikipedia... Is it Palermo 3300+ Socket 754? Then it has AMD64 enabled. If it is Barton Socket A 3300+, then it is just pure 32bit.

If you will have less than 4G memory, or you badly need last flashplayer, then go for 32bit. Otherwise, you may try 64bit. You may get a (very small) speed increase and no hassle to use over 3.2G memory. Gnash plays youtube quite well, I don't care about most of the flash stuff.

Thanks for correcting me.
I see what you mean about the palermo, although when you scroll down on that page it lists the 3300+ as socket 754 32 bit??.
Without more information we are guessing.
Also there are native flash and java plug-ins for 64bit now.

Regards.

I have a sempron 2800+ which is 64 bit. I have used he 64 and 32 bit veersions. The 64 seems to me to run a little faster but then maybe it is just me If you need wireless and other special drivers i would suggest you go with 32 bit they are easier to get working , mostly right out of the box.

Flash player worked right out of the box with 32 bit but had to do a little work for it to work with 64bit.

So after al is said and done easiest way is 32 bit, if have some time 64 seems to go a little faster.

Hope this helps

I tend to agree w/ the above. Although Flash/Java support for 64bit is a non-issue now, other things will pop up. I have 1 64bit PC, and just don't feel the 64bit OS is quite there yet, to make the switch. The speed difference isn't *that* dramatic, that for me, it was worth the hassle of running 64bit.

Recently installed a 64-bit desktop. The only issue was to get the motherboard and memory to talk together. Dual nvidia card has is sometimes a bit strange with "nvidia" driver but the same was true for 32bit. Console scrolling bug is still there as it was for 32bit.

So for me the effort was the same. I haven't tried any obscure wifi drivers though.
