This is mostly an FYI. I have been messing around with an old desktop to see what I could do.
I installed an image of XP, then tried installing Ubuntu. I chose the option to install along side XP, and adjusted the partition size. The install gets to the point where I create my password, and I get exactly 4 characters entered in the first password field and it freezes. It did the same thing on two consecutive installation attempts.
I had 10.04 completely installed on this machine before I wiped it and installed the image of XP. I may try again today, but will be going back to school tomorrow, and will not have much time to play with it then.
I got Ubuntu 10.4 LTS installed, and then tried to tweak it. I went to Panel Properties and changed the property from Expand to Autohide. After that the bottom line in the Panel disappeared, and on the top line the whole left side stopped working. I cannot get Applications, Places or System to work, and none of the icons in the panel will open up and work either.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem? Is there a way to use the installation disk to fix the problem? Do I have to put in another side by side installation of a second Ubuntu to get a fully working version? If I do it this way, can I remove the version that has stopped working correctly and still keep all the data I had made with Ubuntu version 9.10?
Tried again. Fresh install of XP image, then attempted to install 10.04 with same results, froze when entering password. This time a got 1st password entered and tabbed to the next field, but nothing more.
Weird thing is, I can navigate away from that page, can use the back button, but still hangs when I get to entering the password.
Just a thought, but maybe a bad disk. don't know if you are doing a CD install, but if you are, maybe the image is bad or the disk is scratched. If it dies in only one spot, then I would suspect something bad with the disk and not a bug in the installer. Try burning a new disk from a fresh image and see what happens

good luck
That is a very good idea. I will try that as soon as I have some time and post my results.
