This is not cool, but it's easy to turn off. "apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping".

Seems fine by me.

I consider his statement to be inaccurate. Synaptic and Apt require root access to operate, but they need to be authorized by the user each time. They're not set to run as setuid root by default, are they?
