Here's some advice: *NEVER* do an in-place upgrade! *ALWAYS* do a clean install whenever possible. Why? Because first of all, when you use the Live CD, you have a better chance of testing your hardware to see if it works. Secondly, if your hardware doesn't work on the Live CD (like in this case), you can troubleshoot it before it's too late.
Even if doing an in-place upgrade is absolutely necessary, *ALWAYS* burn a live CD first and debug your hardware *BEFORE* you upgrade.
