LXer: Like open source software, a book is more than its content

Published at LXer:

Since launching the The Open Organization in June, I've received questions about why we chose to distribute the book via a traditional publisher. Some have wondered why we didn't release the book with a Creative Commons license so people could remix, redistribute, and even translate the book as they wanted. That's hilarious. One could say exactly the same thing about software -- the usual model involves selling material licensed via traditional copyright terms. Perhaps if they want to gain the trust of more business customers they should sell their software via a more traditional, trusted business model?
By the way, I do fully understand what he is saying and in his position I may well do the same but it doesn't stop it being hilarious double-talk to me.
