Interesting article although I would definitely not have recommended Fedora as a new Linux user's first Linux distro, especially coming from a Mac, where consistency and stability are key. Gnome is not a bad transition desktop though. Nothing wrong with Fedora, it is just as as bleeding edge as bleeding edge gets without being alpha.
I did exactly the opposite of this: I went from 20+ years of Linux usage to a Mac. I have been using Macs on and off since 2009 but went full time about a year ago, using Linux in VMs instead of as a main desktop. I am a heavy Apple infrastructure user and also have local backups of data as secondary means of data storage. I find that I have more time on my hands because I am not futzing with everything all the time. Part of this is me: I have OCD and can never settle on a desktop environment, window manager or even a distribution. I solved it by taking my choice away. Couldn't be happier and now I am focusing on the things I enjoy: hacking (internal lab), writing and photography.
I can't walk away from open source entirely: I have been using it for nearly a third of my life; I have just changed the way I use it.
