This article reads far too much into this (IMHO perfectly understandable) decision. The tone is highly misleading.
First of all, this article implies that the very future of KDE itself is under threat, while in reality the only issue is KDE on Ubuntu. This has no impact on the future of KDE on any of the numerous other Linux distributions.
Secondly, they haven't even said that they won't offer KDE as an option. the only issue is not being able to provide long term support for this particular release of KDE 4 because it has not been around long enough for long enough to assess it's stability. This situation will change with future releases, when KDE 4 has become more stable.
