After taking a design path that sent many of its users running to other desktops, GNOME seems to be giving its users what they want: a GNOME 2.x style desktop. But, is it too late? Will GNOME fans come back?

I don't know what the fuss is about. I personally like Gnome 3.x (Shell) and use it as one of my main DEs. MATE is great and has its place in the desktop world but so does Gnome 3.x. People whinged long and hard when KDE dropped 3.5 and went to 4 yet it is still around and I find KDE to be full of bling but not much substance (just my humble opinion).
There is a substantial difference in the way KDE and GNOME developers handle things and how they treat other developers and their users. I recommend to read this: http://igurublog.wordpress.com/2012/...ing-in-threes/
It is a longer article, but totally worth the time.

My experience with KDE isn't all that great while Gnome has been very helpful on all but 1 issue. Horses for courses and each to their own.
