Damn hostile plebeians in their chaotic bazaar, the wizards in the towers have spoken! Hear and obey them! Sure, they could have been innovators and done something different, but that might be misconstrued as a conspiracy or collusion or uncompetitive business practices. By doing the same thing as everyone else they've proved themselves to be free thinkers instead of sheeple or lemmings. So keep thumbing you way through life like a chimpanzee instead of designing an interface for, say, stylus (pen) computing or something as radical as the mind/brain interface.
