i just read about this on slashdot.org i wonder what will come of it, will there be updates to all distros soon rendering this flaw obsolete?

Isn't the main question hopw did this get onto the machines? I know a rootkit's not a trivial thing but surely they're a solved problem and it's the exploit which is the issue? If your system has an explouit then, it's safe to say, it is likely it has a rootkit.
