YaST isnt working

SuSE has always distributed their versions as FTP installable. The only ISO's that have been released were LiveCD's and SuSE 9.1 Personal (wasn't worth the download anyway

). That doesn't mean that it is not free to install SuSE.

This is indeed strange. It seems that SuSE has more packages on the DVD than on the CD set. Don't know why!?!

To make my point: SuSE has always been free to download. The FTP versions are released 1-2 months after the release of the boxed version. This is not a secret! I think it's only fair if they release the commercial package in advance. Gives them the chance to make some money. If you don't want to spend the money, just wait. AFAIK Mandrake does the same.

Besides, you can also change the installation source at any time to include one of the ftp mirrors. This should get you any packages that you're missing.

Oh, and SuSE also has an online update feature. It's called YOU (YaST Online Update), it sits in the lower right corner of the screen. Once it's turned on, it will go green when there are updates, and red when there are security updates.

I have to say that Suse, technically talking, is a very good distro.

What bothered me was the impression of the official Suse Site: i fell that they are always hiding thinks from the users (packages), not showing the place to download them.

I downloaded the last version of Fedora Core 3 (4 cds), i took 45 minutes to install "almost" everything on my notebook. This version comes with Gnome 2.8, an update system (on-line update) with all functions working fine.

I really use Linux as a powerfull work environment, a fun center, and also as a developer station.
I'm a IT consultant.

Wow, try reading a lil bit before you go flying off the handle, SuSE does have a free version, but is not available by ISO download, and only about 2 months after the 'official' pro version has been in stores. it is available by FTP install only. have a look in SuSE's FTP site and look at the README's in the boot folder that explain how to download and use the floppy images or the CD boot ISO along with the manual install program in order to install SuSE Pro over FTP... it's not that hard and I have been using SuSE Pro (ftp version) since 8.2... it's free and every bit as good as the boxed version (if no more flexible) the only thing that is a pain in the rear is if you do not have a broadband connection it takes a helluva long time to download and install all the packages over the internet.

but the latest SuSE is £30 which is not like rip-off.

alternatively, you may look into ubuntu.

I seem to be having the same issue as DickH. Before i throw it all out there however i should let you all know that i am the newest noob of the noobs... guess that would make me the king of the noobs. This is my first real linux install. I have migrated from a windows environment. Suse as made the transition relatively simple and im very happy with the change, and im enjoying the work involved with learning the new OS.

so anyway on with the issue

Problem.
I can open yast in kde and login as root.
When i click on one of the modules. Say for example Software Management under the Software button or 'Sound' under the Hardware button. Yast will tell me "Starting Module" but then nothing happens. It happen with all of the modules I then try to run yast in a Terminal window, and i get

warning: the ncurses frontend is installed but does not work
You need to install yast2-ncurses to use the YaST2 text mode interface.

So i googled yast2-ncurses. I found links going to this yast2-ncurses-2.13.33-1.2.x86_64.rpm. Im currently running suse 10.1 on a 64bit platform. None of the downloads or ftps that iv found seem to work. My system update says there are no software updates available at this time. Would anyone know where i could find working download for this rpm?

If there is some missing technical information from my computer needed to solve this problem let me know i will do my best to find it.
