now will two completly different wireless network cards be able to talk to each other in order to setup a home network. Say an intel wireless card and a zyxel wireless usb stick?

The brand or type of wireless device doesn't mather. It's the protocol that has to be the same (think of it as the language the devices speak).

Problem in Linux is that not all chipsets are supported (some brands with the one make and model can have different chipsets). Look in the hardware list here at LQ which wireless device are sure to be supported (in other words: have linux drivers that work).
