Why should I make the switch to SuSE? (not from win, but from other distro)
Ok guys. For the past month I've been thinking a lot about switching to SuSE Linux. I figured all of you SuSE users could help me out and tell me why you chose it over other distros. I've used in the past: Slackware (9.1 and 10), Gentoo (4.1 and 2004.1), Suse 8.0, and Mandrake 9.1. Obviously things have changed A LOT since SuSE 8 and I've been reading nothing but good about it. I'm currently using Fedora 2...without broadband. :-( I'm stuck with dial-up for now, so my system is hopelessly out of date. (Some updates are like 500 megs!) I like to stay on the bleeding edge and though i've used some hardcore do-it-yourself distros, I'd like to settle down into a turn on my machine and enjoy kind of distro. (As opposed to a turn on your machine, edit 4 config files, log in, start x,, etc, etc....then enjoy.)
And also, I really want to get SuSE 9.2, but I've heard some awesome reports of the 2.6.10 kernel. Should I just get 9.2 or wait for 9.3? And when would 9.3 be coming out?
Going only by SuSE's past releases, I'd estimate 9.3 to arrive this Spring. Should you wait for that release? I guess you'll have to decide on that one.
I am a pretty typical user: I have a Slackware box, have gone through Gentoo, tried Mandrake, Ubuntu, Mepis, Fedora, and many others.. I chose to put SuSE on my work laptop (and on the notebooks of those who work for me) because I needed something in my job that was easy to manage, operate and stable. I've not been disappointed. SuSE detected all of my hardware and implimented ACPI with no effort on my part. I've been extremely pleased with this release.
Should you choose SuSE too? I guess only you can answer that one! Best of luck with your decision.
Noobie here, but I have been using SuSE 9.2 and it works great. No real problems except the sound, which I have finally figured out. It is a great distribution, especially for a noobie like me. I really like the YaST control area and updates. As I said to start with I have not had any other experience with a different Linux distributions but I have heard that there is not too many that can touch SuSE's install process, which of course is a huge part of getting Linux up and running. 2 more cents from a noob.
I've never asked myself that question, but you obviously have. You should switch because you're tempted to. I think that you'll find its nearly the same experience as any others, but you never know. Some small things it does may keep you. If you switch, I'd suggest you buy it so you can get support and a good manual to read (and access to the good download mirrors.
