SuSE has a fully free version: OpenSuSE which is available at www.opensuse.com. You can download it from torrent or ftp/http. It is free to use, but comes slightly hampered in terms of media and copyrighted software. You will have to download some codecs to get DVDs and mp3s to work, then get pdf support and such.

It's the same with the retail version, due to German law.

Retail version is not hampered by anything, you get working dvds, media, support, etc. Retail mean syou paid for it, and thus you have access to said things directly upon install, unlike OpenSuSE.

Not encrypted DVDs - even with Retail SuSE you need to download libdvdcss.

As I've said in another thread, retail is unable to play encrypted DVDs. See that thread for the reason.
