Haven't used zen, so no ideas for that. With autoyast xml you can pretty much do a image install, if everything is set the right way. Why do you want a full image ?
Copy the cd data/packages to some local share (ftp/http/nfs )with installation source . This makes you a nice repository to be used in installation. You can use the same repo for as many autoyast xml-files as you want.
You dont need as much data as you would need with using a full image (like RIS needs in MS world).
Autoinstallation image contains everything for image deployment. Packages can be added/removed from default unattended installation, network services can be configured, root password, partitioning, keyboard layout,...
