usb no media found

I did a long overdue update on my Suse 10.0 or maybe it wasn't overdue. Anyway, after the update I plugged in a couple of usb sticks to transfer some files. I plug the stick in and there was no automount like there usually is. No big deal open up Konquerer and browse to the media directory. When opening Konqueror the autodetect popup appears recognizing the usb stick. However, I am greeted with the error "no media in device". Under the media directory the stick is mounted with its volume label appearing as a directory which would normally be the case. When clicked the error "folder /media/usbdisk does not exist" shows up. At the command prompt you can navigate to the folder directory but the ls command yields a "no medium found error".

I took a quick look at the usb modules I have loaded. Are you missing any? (note: some listed are not usb devices or not used for storage)

Code:
lsmod | grep usb
usbhid 69792 0
usb_storage 105536 2
scsi_mod 173744 6 st,sr_mod,sbp2,sg,sd_mod,usb_storage
usbcore 163368 5 usbhid,usb_storage,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd
ide_core 174720 4 usb_storage,ide_cd,amd74xx,ide_disk
Open up the konsole and enter: sudo tail -f /var/log/messsages
Then reinsert a usb drive. Is the device assigned. Is an error indicated?

What filesystem is supposed to be on the devices. You could try using fsck to repair the filesystems if they are truly damaged. Could you have previously removed the devices before the cache was written to them?

Thanks for the help

The problem is me.

I got so used to not having to reboot the computer (unlike some other OS) that I did not think that a reboot would be necessary. At this point I was getting tired and just wanted to get my stuff done. But, the update did a kernel patch and that should warrant a reboot.
