upgrading to the next suse and backup software ?

hello,
i have been told that upgrading from one suse(say 10) to another(say 10.1) is notoriously unreliable and more often than not its best just to do a clean install.

Now having been told that linux is safe, stable and the best for system security how do i upgrade/fresh install without losing all my files(raw files, digital photography). In other words how do i get to play with the latest version of suse ?

Is there backup software that comes with suse 10.1(dvd backup ?)

Many thanks, steve.

Assuming that you have created a separate partition for /home (and that all your data is somewhere in /home) then you can easily install a newer version of SuSE (or any other distro for that matter) by simply retaining the curretn partitioning scheme, and *NOT* reformatting /home. You'll end up with the new distro occupying the same partitions as you're now using, leaving /home untouched.

Of course, it's always a good idea to backup any important data to CD or DVD or another hard drive first, just to play it safe

Do you have K3b installed? Personally, it's become my favorite CD/DVD writer app, with a clean interface and simple drag-drop functionality.

A lengthier article that may be of interest: http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT2280165098.html

Good luck with it Steve
