Upgrading Kernel

I have downloaded kernel 2.6.8.1, as soon as I run "make xconfig" I get the following error:

scripts/kconfig/qconf arch/i386/Kconfig
qconf: cannot connect to X server
make[1]: *** [xconfig] Error 1
make: *** [xconfig] Error 2

I then tried running xhost +, still the same.

Please help

Hi, i have not tried compiling on suse before but here is a link which has kernel-2.6.8.

for some reason the xconfig cannot connect to the x server
try make gconfig or make menuconfig (does not need x server).verify if you followed the compiling steps... check my site

be sure you are root

For me, to connect to X, I have to be root at the X session.

There, I can use make xconfig. From then I got other errors
