Leap 15 was being upgraded on the RAID primary sector of 40GB. Is RAID part of the problem?
I am able to run Geckolinux from a USB and so can see my data files and they are fine.
During boot the RAID is examined and checked and reports no problems however, the Gecko file manager shows me two 1TB HDs. If I access the first I see all my (Non-linux)data, but if I select the second I get a long winded error message. I guess that is because the 1st drive is the master in the RAID setup and is mounted but the second isn't.
However, I doubt my assumption is correct as the Gecko file manager also shows me two 40GB HDs. This being the Linux zone and swap.
So, RAID checks and configuration settings tell me all is ok, then I get the All is not Good message from Yast.
I would be happy to reformat the 40gb sectors put aside for LEAP but would be very unhappy to risk damaging my private data.
As an aside, and so as not to confuse anybody, I am unable to get the Gecklinux to drive my wla0, and so all this communication is done from an independent Win machine.
A further aside,if, in Geckolinux, I do a /cat/*-release
I get a report
NAME="opensuse leap"
VERSION="15.0"
I downloaded Leap 15 ISO, burned it to a dvd, ran the dnd.
It came up with statements telling me the repositories could not be found on the Susie site but gave me no way to change the url.
I read quite a bit.
Someone told me to "Simply zypper dup"
I tried that. No that wasn't it.
I got the ISO from a different site and burnt that and ran it. I certainly got further than the firt time and wasn't asked about the Susie repositories but then ran into the Exit code 32.
I have been unable to get the Geckolinux I'm running from the USB, to recognize my wlan0 so I'm doing a lot of hopping from Gecko to Windows to explore possibilities.
I am able to use SU facilities, I am also able to change to another non-gui screen and type commands but am not knowledgeable to know what commands to type.
I would be quite happy to do a full install of 15 or even 42.3 in the 40gb partition but am running scared of interfering in any way with the remainder of the disk.
Partitioning of the disk?
You should create a separate partition for /home, so with a fresh install (without formatting /home), then all your personal files are kept.
You have to change the repos under /etc/zypper/repos.d from Leap 42.3 to Leap 15.0.
That is divided 40Gb Linux, the remainder for my data.
In Geckolinux, they show up as two 40Gb disks and two 889Gb disks.
Selecting either of the 40Gb drives shows me their contents, (they are identical.
Selecting one of the 889Gb disks shows me all my personal files which I have full access to. But selecting the 2nd 889Gb drive delivers a warning. I'll attach a picture.
This error message specifically mentions /dev/sda3.
There is no way that I can see, that let's me take that drive out of the RAID array because I don't know how to identify it, and in fact, the start up tests that RAID does, do not identify a problem anyway.
I recommend backing up the personal data and reinstalling with a better partitioning.
/boot/efi (vfat some MB)
/boot (500 MB)
/(root) (100 GB)
/home (? GB)
/var (50 GB)
/tmp (50 GB)
* If Windows is to boot from a GPT disk, a partition of type Microsoft Reserved (gdisk internal code 0x0C01) is recommended. This partition should be about 128 MiB in size. It ordinarily fol-
lows the EFI System Partition and immediately precedes the Windows data partitions. (Note that old versions of GNU Parted create all FAT partitions as this type, which actually makes the par-
tition unusable for normal file storage in both Windows and Mac OS X.)
No advice received, except perhaps, do it all again and risk losing everything, turned out to be useful.
I replaced the drives and started again but while I was waiting for the new drives to arrive, I got a couple of other available drives and practiced making and breaking RAID 1.
I learnt then that no action is required to rebuild the faulty drive when replaced. No one mentioned that!
I then set about installing LEAP 15.
No problem whatsoever.
I'd take out a drive, reboot, change a file then go through the procedure of rebooting and rebuilding with the new drive and it all went without a problem.
Over the time since I last wrote, I have installed 15 4 times. The last being on the new drives.
I was then able to mount the good original drive and with some relief, found all my data there.
It is a faff getting back to where I was especially as the KDE copying procedure is either faulty or I've not selected the correct options.
Giving myself all the necessary permissions, I found that when I copied a folder from one place to another, if it contained other folders, then only those folders were copied to the new location but none of their contents however, dropping into that top directory and everything worked well.
I don't know what went wrong with the original attempts at installing 15 but I've learnt a lot in the interim.
Tried how? Did you change /etc/zypp/repos.d/*.repo content from 42.3 to 15.0 first? Did you first disable any optional repos (other than Packman)?
I have two Optiplex 780s. On one I installed 15.0 fresh without incident. The other I did zypper dup upgrade from 42.1 to 15.0 without any material difficulty that I can recall. Neither 780 have RAID (both are SFF, no place to put 2nd HD unless eSATA), but I've done zypper dup in previous versions on RAID1 without difficulty. There are reputed issues with installing 15.0 to RAID. https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1094933 is in confirmed state ATM.
