updates with packagekit : notify the user when rebooting is needed

Hello All,

Using Leap 15.1

Zypper warns the user when some processes must be restarted or the system rebooted.

Is it a way to get such warnings when updates are made via the plasma packagekit widget ?

The only time I ever see the warning is when I update the kernel. Unlike ms, linux doesn't need a boot after most updates.

Find do receive warnings, not so often for reboot is usually that application(s) currently in use have been replaced.

To decide what to do use

either zypper ps

or zypper ps -s

occasionally do both.

Sometimes can just close the application, then open it again, and the warning vanishes.

Looking helps me decide whether to log out then back in, or to do shutdown --reboot may be as easy while I get another coffee ;-)

When decide log out then back in, usually do check again zypper ps in case reboot was a better choice {:-O

@polpak : your post describes what I personally do on my computer.

The context of my problem is different.

I've set up a laptop with 15.1 for my wife.

She is a Windows user and has no time to learn how to use a CLI.

The plasma packagekit widget allows her to decide when the update takes place.

Asking her to reboot after each update would be counterproductive.

Before spending time to write a sudo script, I'm checking if an out of the box solution exists.

Any idea ?

Am using GNOME Version 3.34.4

When I start computers also when login the PackageKit Daemon automatically runs the updates, which it can take a while doing, then puts an advice/Reminder with Evolution on the top screen.

It appears users need the root password to approve the update.

Code:
DELETED@DELETED:~> pkaction -v --action-id=org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update
org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update:
  description: Update software
message: Authentication is required to update software
  vendor: The PackageKit Project
  vendor_url: http://www.packagekit.org/
  icon: package-x-generic
  implicit any: auth_admin
  implicit inactive: auth_admin
  implicit active: yes

DELETED@DELETED:~>

Am needing leave now, believe this can be changed, not yet located how...

Perhaps in documentation:

Documentation/leap/security/html/book.security/cha-security-policykit

Quite different here :

KDE Plasma 5.12.8

PackageKit runs in the background and notifies, via the system tray, when updates are available.

Then the user is able to apply the update without giving the root password.

The problem is that the user doesn't know if the computer must be restarted or if she must logout/login.
