That looks like you need to install postmaster.

Hope this helps some.

Again, as with numerous other threads of yours:
  • You are using a COMMERCIAL, PAY-FOR distribution...have you contacted SuSE tech support?
  • SLES 10 is OLD...it went end-of-life in 2013, with extended support only available if you PAY, through 2016. Since you posted previously about security issues regarding SSL, the question again is, if you want to be secure, why aren't you upgrading and paying for support?
These are the same things that are suggested to you when you post about Red Hat Enterprise.

Have you checked the log files? Any messages/hints? Has this EVER worked for you? Why are you using such an old version of PostgreSQL, rather than upgrading? The logs will give you information about the message, but chances are it is a permissions issue, a path problem, or an issue with the configuration. You (again) don't provide any details that would let anyone help you.

It should be part of PostgreSQL:
Code:
locate postmaster
/usr/man/man1/postmaster.1.gz
/usr/lib64/postgresql/9.3/bin/postmaster
/usr/doc/postgresql-9.3.0/html/app-postmaster.html
/usr/include/postgresql/server/postmaster
/usr/include/postgresql/server/postmaster/bgworker.h
/usr/include/postgresql/server/postmaster/postmaster.h
/usr/include/postgresql/server/postmaster/autovacuum.h
/usr/include/postgresql/server/postmaster/pgarch.h
/usr/include/postgresql/server/postmaster/startup.h
/usr/include/postgresql/server/postmaster/fork_process.h
/usr/include/postgresql/server/postmaster/syslogger.h
/usr/include/postgresql/server/postmaster/walwriter.h
/usr/include/postgresql/server/postmaster/bgwriter.h
Probably want to get the current version of PostgreSQL, eh?

Postmaster is a depreciated alias of Postgres.

By the way, did you initialize PostgreSQL after installation (that would be the pgsql directory where you data bases live)?

Hope this helps some.

Sorry, but you CAN upgrade it easily. If you're paying for SLES, there is already an established upgrade procedure that would require only one reboot, which is easily done.

...which brings us back to the several questions THAT YOU HAVE STILL NOT ANSWERED, much the same as numerous other threads of yours:
  • You are using a COMMERCIAL, PAY-FOR distribution...have you contacted SuSE tech support?
  • SLES 10 is OLD...it went end-of-life in 2013, with extended support only available if you PAY, through 2016. Since you posted previously about security issues regarding SSL, the question again is, if you want to be secure, why aren't you upgrading and paying for support?

  • Has this EVER worked for you?
  • Why are you using such an old version of PostgreSQL, rather than upgrading?
AGAIN, as you've been told several times, unless you provide details and answer questions, there's little we can help you with, and not much point in posting.

AGAIN, since you aren't paying attention: SLES 10sp4 is a COMMERCIAL, PAY FOR PRODUCT...if you want packages for it, you need to be PAYING FOR SLES, at which point you can download them through their software repositories. This is the same thing you've been told several times now, both for SLES and RHEL. The answer remains the same. The "step for installation" is"
  • Contact SuSE support
  • Install the latest version of things via the online repositories
  • -OR- Get the source package from support and ask them for installation instructions

So you say that you CAN upgrade, but won't because it's too much effort to "go through chain"?? If you are the client, then you need to stop what you're doing, and give your systems administrators the job of fixing the broken postgresql. If you ARE the administrator, then there is NO REASON you cannot upgrade. The "number of processes" is meaningless...either you want a secure, up-to-date server or not.

It would be helpful if you ANSWERED THE QUESTIONS you've been asked several times now, including the one asked by tronayne . You didn't post ANY log information at all, just the output of the postmaster command, which is NOT a log file.
