You could try upgrading to SUSE 10. You'd also be updating a lot of other components, too. There's no reason for you (that I could think of) for you to be using such an outdated version of SUSE. However, this sounds more like a driver issue. I think Epsons are pretty well supported, although I'm unsure since I've always been an HP guy. Try looking on Epson's site for Linux drivers, and if you find them, then just install them. But, if this indeed does not fix the problem, then just try upgrading the OS.
Oh, and it looks like you're also on RedHat. Does this mean Fedora, RHEL, or the very old RH9? If you do have any of those, you could try seeing if you get the same problem.
