SuSe installation: No disks found

I am installing SuSE onto a brand-new IBM xSeries server machine (Intel).

Before I booted up the SuSE with the installation CD, I have
formated the two SCSI drivers with the SCSI utilities (low-level
formatting). Then I booted the machine with the installation CD.

I could choose language and then the system reportd an error,
saying "No hard disks were found" and
"No automatic proposal possible. specify mount points
manually in the 'Partioner dialog".

I then choose "change" pull-down menu, selected partitioning,
then get:

"No disks found, please use th eupdate CD for installation"

If I ignored the message, going with "next" button,
I got: "Select one of the option to continue"
and I could not find any options available.

Any advice?

thanks,

Well, two questions:

1. What version of SuSE do you use?

2. Exactly which type of xServer are you installing to? (Or rather, which SCSI controller does it contain?)

It looks as if your installation does not recognize the SCSI controller that is present in the server.

Hello,

I'm used to install SuSE PRo distros on IBM eserver.

By my own experience I can tell you
- SuSE PRO 8.X through 9.1 on ESERVER XSERIES 205 everything is OK
- SuSE PRO 9.1 on ESERVER XSERIES 206 IMPOSSIBLE : there are no scsi drives seen
(IBM response is machine is only certified with SuSE enterprise 9.0)
- SuSE PRO 9.0 on ESERVER XSERIES 206 is OK BUT don't YOU !! If you install the kernel
patch (and perhaps another, I don't know exactly yet) and if you have
a DAT scsi drive installed you'll get problems with it

I've never installed SuSE Enterprise and I don't know the differences with SuSE PRO
but I think I will take the time to test it because I've lost a lot of time on such problems.
Machines are certified by "contructors (?)" but we never know exactly which distro
and sometimes new models arrive and are said certified because the older one
was certified. And when the machine arrives, you need six month to install it perfectly.

I hope this helps you.
If you have some experience on these distro or server or devices not supported
please tell me.
Thanks
Nadine
