Question Suse can't boot from sata harddrive. plz help

Hello,

I have a sata hard drive in my pc. I tried to install SuSE linux pro 9.0, but it didn't detect my harddrive. Then i aborted the installation and tried manual installation. I loaded ata_piix (sata module)module. Then i tried to install and it detected my harddrive and installed everything. I installed bootloader in a floppy disk. And i rebooted the system from that floppy and i got a kernel panic that it could mount root file system.

So i decided to install mandrake 10.1 community edition. Everything went fine. It detected my hardrisk without manually loading any files. And booted using mandrake bootloader from a floppy.(i installed mandrake's boot loader in another floppy). I wanna run suse. plz help me. Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem with 9.0 and ata_piix.
I could solve it by booting with the kernel parameter APIC.

Simply type APIC when the bootmenu appears. You should see it in the bottom line.

HDD!

Can you boot the system when you enter 'Manual Installation' and load the SATA driver by hand? Select 'Installation' and then 'Boot Installed System' (or something similar).

Maybe you'll need to include the driver to initrd (but therefore you need to boot the installed system). You may then login as root and type 'mkinitrd -m ata-piix' to build a ramdisk with the driver.

Yes i can boot the system when i enter 'manual installation' and load sata driver by hand. I am gonna try to make that ramdisk now and will come back with the results. Thanks for the help.

IIRC, Suse 9.0 uses the 2.4 kernel. SATA is only supported on 2.6.3 kernel and up (Suse 9.1).

the irony! suse was the only distro i could get to see my sata drives. i even managed to set up a software raid. course it's 9.2 version but i think it's just one box to the next.

Not completely true. S-ATA support became much better in 9.1, but was already present in 9.0.

Yeah, i guess so. I installed it in my sata drive, but can't boot from it. And i tried to mkinitrd but it couldn't find module ata-piix. So gave up the idea of using suse9.0. Instead i am using mandrake 10.1 community edition. It supports everything, even my printer epson stylus cx3200. Suse didn't detect it. But mandy did .

I guess u haven't even tried mandrake 10.0 or 10.1. It was the only distro which detected my sata drive without any tweaks.

no. that is what i meant by the irony of it and being from box to box (cpu). I've tried 5 different distro's. Mandrake detects the sata and tries to load the driver but hangs there. everytime. w/ suse all i did was partition the drives with a /boot on one then a raid 0 for the rest. works like a champ.

so i guess you wouldn't know how to get passed that part of the hang then if it installed ok for you?
