apt-get? why?

I don't think so, but then again why in the hell would you be using apt-get on a SuSE box anyways, it has YaST for package management (which works awesome) and YOU (YaST Online Update) for updating. You can upgrade using YaST, but for me that sometimes causes weird problems, I prefer to back up my data on a networked machine and then just do a fresh install and restore my backed-up data over the network... Presto new SuSE running perfectly!

apt is available, there is no component list available for 9.2 yet though http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/

as far as upgrading to 9.2 with apt, yes and no. you can definitely install some of the latest software available. i'm running kde 3.3.1/gnome2.8, kernel 2.6.8-20041015122347-default. but it's technically not suse 9.2.

As far as up-dating to 9.2 from other versions I doubt this would be possible @ apt-get (the Guru site) and the future ftp sites will probably allow you to grab 9.2 as a free download.

I use # apt-get install ##### every now and again because the install works -- often better and simpler -- than YaST. However, you really have to become a master of one or the other. As a tendency I do my installs through YaST.

I'd love; however, to be able to download all my dependicies at one time. Still a little confused here.

It has been done in the past, but it was complicated as hell.

Alessandro,

As far as I know the present apt-get site doesn't even support the new 9.2 packages. I'm looking @ buying the new full packaged version of 9.2 Pro and then wipe my pc of MS stuff. I use apt-get and YaST, but have learned that you have to run with either the one or other.

If you want to download the new 9.2 Pro I'd suggest you back-up what you have and then wait for 9.2 to hit the ftp servers.

actually they use the same rpm database, so changes done by apt are recognised by yast, and vice versa. i use suse YOU for security updates and apt for everything else.

rshaw,

What do you mean by "security up-dates". Can you explain?

There is the difference between YOU and YaST. I never figured out the difference.

'YOU' is "Yast Online Update" it's just one of the modules that make up 'YAST' .

i'm not a suse developer, this is just my observation from using every version of suse since rocks were still soft.

normally yast online update will return a list of any bug fixes and critical updates available.it doesn't offer the latest versions of programs, unless it is to fix a serious bug.

apt offers the latest updates available from the suse developers, but hasn't or won't be pushed to the official 'you' mirrors.

I was only answering somebody's else question.
I know very well that there are no apt4rpm packages for 9.2 yet. Normally it takes a while, especially for the component base, to be released (about at the same time when the FTP download becomes available)

As rshaw said, apt and YaST are perfectly compatible with one another.
I use apt pretty much for everything, also because I have noticed on several occasions that sometimes YaST doesn't calculate dependencies very well and leaves you with a broken system.
Then I do:
# apt-get -f install
and the problem is solved in no time.

And BTW I normally buy my SuSE system.
