Suse 9.1 Video

Hello, I dont know how much further many of you are in the life of linux, But today i just installed linux suse 9.1 for the first time on ma laptop... It was an amazing fact for me that i was intro to this new world.

Well with a start i installed twice to make sure that i know i can install linux without any problems. The first time it was a jackpot... i browsed and saw everything was up and running smoothly. BEAUTIFUL!!!!

But when i installed for the second time, I changed my resolution a lil bit higher trying to test if the linux could take it. After i boot the PC, cannot see the graphics, the screen goes blank. In the background i can hear the machine is still working and up. I also tried to put the root password and the username and can hear it working.

Since i'm still new to this World of "LINUX", I need some assistance in changing my graphics settings so that i can have my Graphics mode back. I can log in with failsafe but to the kernel only.

Will Appreciate for the assistance

Mody

There's a couple of things you can try.
Ctrl Alt + and Ctrl Alt - will switch the display through the available resolutions one at a time. Keep pressing until the screen appears the way you want.

The other way is to use Ctrl Alt F2 to switch to a login prompt, login and then type sax2 (SuSE's screen config tool) and follow the instructions.

Hope that helps some.

Thanks salparadise. That could bring me back to the graphics mode.

I am having another problem as i log into that. I get a "Question- Suse Hardware Tool" Dialog... Saying that {Your Monitor Dint report its X- and Y- size.... might cause display problems. } Can that give me any problem in the coming days?... As i am not seeing any problems with the fonts or graphics... ?And if that isn't a problem ... how can i stop that message to appear?

Bless ya.

Mody

AFAIK no.
I've run slackware with no Vert/Horiz values in the X config file without any problems. As to whether it's technically advisable I'm not sure.

how can i stop that message to appear?
I don't know.

From memory, if SuSE plugger is running it will alert you to hardware changes or problems. I have a SuSE box at work that periodically throws up a box saying it has found a new mouse, even though it is really the same mouse. That box has a "tick the box to stop alerting me" option.
