SuSE 64 bit

Hello. I have recently bought a new computer (AMD 64 bit 3000+) and I want to use SuSE 64 bit edition - preferably 9.1 or 9.2.

Can I download it for free anywhere? and how do I do it?

Suse does not make the installation ISO images available for free download (in other words you'll need to buy Suse from a retailer if you want to install from an official set of CD's or DVD's) however Suse does make the full set of packages available for free download. This site looks like it's close to you. Doing an FTP installation takes a fair amount of time mainly due to the fact that you'll need to download at least 3G of data, and I'd advise you to read the instructions before starting. It's not hard to do, but it's not as simple as just putting a CD into the drive and starting it up.

There are a number of existing threads here at LQ on how to do an FTP installation, I'd suggest taking a look at those as well. Good luck with it and Welcome to LQ -- J.W.

Edit: These are the instructions I was referring to

Try www.lioncom.co.uk in Orpington Kent, for 9.2 shipping same day. There is also a Linux group near you for support see the lugs in Linux Format .

I'm running on amd64 ASrock with single sata, Man10.0 version of amd64 version wouldn't run on this board, so had to change to Suse9.1 which has no problems.

Hey thanks, the links seem really helpful. I probably will end up buying a copy. It'll give something back lol.

You hopefully will see more of me as I get stuck. Thanks for the welcome.

Just checking...(first go at this sorry)

After downloading the boot image boot/boot.iso, i burn it to a cd and reboot with it in.

Then I manually change the installation place to the ftp server, and it will install? Where do I change the directory to?
a) http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/f...se/x86_64/9.1/
or b) http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/f...1/suse/x86_64/

I assume that the x86_64 means that it is 64 bit :P

Thanks,
