Slow internet connection Suse Linux 11.1 (tried everything)

I recently upgraded to Suse Linux 11.1 with hopes that my wireless card would finally work. I have a Linksys card with the RT2500 chipset. It works with WEP key protection so long as you don't use KNetworkManager which has a bug that doesn't save the WEP key. I use YAST and its network service to configure the card. It uses DHCP.

Anyway, the card works, but the internet connection is really slow. On a speed test it downloads at about .39 Mbps with a ping of 292 ms. I have a Win XP partition that gets about 30 Mbps and a ping of 42 ms on the same speed test both with Firefox. We use a router and a cable modem to connect to the internet.

I've disabled IPv6 both in Firefox and in YAST as some forums suggest.

I found the DNS names for my ISP from the router and I put DNS1 and DNS2 for the ISP for name servers and I put the routers IP for name server 3 in the configuration panel in YAST.

These "fixes" have been suggested by many forums, but I didn't get any speedup. The linux internet connection is still the same speed.

Is there anything else that I can try? Might it be the Linux driver for the wireless card? I'd really like to get the Linux internet connection to work faster.

I also got a Toshiba Satellite and when I use Suse 11.1 with KDE my internnet connection is extremely slow. I looked for a bug or configuration setting but nothing work, so I change desktop to Gnome and everything change.

Now I am using suse 11.1 with gnome and i can compare the speed to mint or mandriva. I will keep looking for information on this, if I found anything I will post it here.

Though I dont use wireless. I have ran into this problem once before. I have a 16mb connection, and all my pages where slow loading. I decided to try a different DNS server free ones off of the Net to test to see if it was a DNS resolving error.

What did you know, it was my ISP DNS boggin down. Try as a test use OpenDNS. Search in google. Its free ... Also Verizon has a free DNS

( 4.2.2.1/5 is Verizon free DNS and 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222 is Opendns.com free DNS. )

Tried it

I tried changing the DNS to the open DNS servers, but that didn't seem to fix the problem.

I think the problem could be with the driver. When I plug the Linux box into the router with the ethernet cable, it works fine with a fast speed.

set rate to 54M

Hi

If it's not too late (I just came across this thread looking for the answer to another problem) I found that my rt2500 based card on a laptop did not hold the RATE after reboot and I had to run "iwconfig wlan0 RATE 54M" after every boot.

It seems to work OK now on suse 11.2

Setting static IP in suse 11.1

In Yast Network devices > Network Settings you should see a list of your network cards (pic 1). Select the Network card that you want the static IP assigned, press "Edit".

Pic 2 shows screen you should see, 3 tabs, second tab "address" should be select by default. Press static IP and enter the details. Network mask is normally 255.255.255.0 or /24

Press "Next" then "OK" and your static IP should be saved...

I can't provide an image sorry. After invoking yast2 you see the blue b/ground and a box on left with [software, hardware, system, network devices etc etc]. The 'software' is probably highlighted. Use the arrow keys to go down to 'Network devices'. You'll see the right-hand box change to show further choices. Going to that box and back use the <> keys.

At 'Network devices' you see in r.h. [dsl, isdn, modem, network settings]. key over and choose 'network settings' and hit 'enter' key.

If your card is detected it shows up in the boxes. At the bottom of the main box you see: [add edit delete] with a letter highlighted. That means you can key alt+letter to get the next dialog, in this case you want to edit, so key alt+i. That is, hold down lefthand 'alt' key and press 'i'.

Again this next box will have highlit letters. It defaults to the 'Address' page and you'll see:

() no IP address
() dynamic address
() statically assigned IP

keying alt+t should get you to the static setup, then in the fields below you put in whatever you want. Use the 'tab' key to jump each field.

Then key alt+n for next page which gives the 'Overview' and you'll see your cardname and its new address at top and in the middle a grey box with the card, its mac address and device name - perhaps eth0.

now key alt+o and yast2 should write out the info. I'm unsure if you need to reboot to establish the changed setup.
