RPM error cannot open Group index...

I've got a weird error when trying to install an rpm. I enter the line:

rpm -Uvh something.rpm

and I get the following error:

error: cannot open Group index using db3 - No such device or address (6)

This is not your usual "rpm database is in use" business. It seems like a permanent error.

Can anyone help?

Maybe the rpm database is defect. You can try to repair it:
http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/1999/01/ke_rpm-db.html

Code:
# rpm --rebuilddb
Don't forget to back-up /var/lib/rpm first!

did that and managed to install the rpm. thanks.

however, i'm still having errors. I tried to uninstall the rpm with rpm -e somerpm but it said it was not installed, so I redid rpm -Uvh somerpm and it said that the rpm was already installed!

Tried rpm -ivh as well, same thing. I don't think it put all the files there though... so I've copied the neccessary files into /usr/lib.

dunno what to do with the stupid thing.

ran rpm -rebuildb again and repeated, no change...

Why not try yast? It may give you better error messages or avoid the error all together.

did that and it's didn't give an error, it read the rpm as being installed. rpm -qa|less now shows the rpm installed so I'm not gonna bother with it any more, I manually copied over the files anyway so as long as they're there I don't have time to waste on this (there's lots of other linux bugs to find workarounds to! )
