You might have some headache by doing that. As far as I can see, SuSE uses a heavily modified kernel, so trying a custom built kernel can break things and make SuSE complain about modules, etc. AppArmor is an example.
Nevertheless, I am compiling my second homebrew kernel on this installation since yesterday. I merely installed kernel sources and following standard kernel compilation steps. I hope this time I'll get there!
You should change your processor to the one you have; for me, I made it "Athlon/Duron/K7".
