Originally posted by stg71 I tried to install SUSE 10 a couple of times, it installs stuff from CD1 fine, but after the reboot when it asks for CD2 problems start.
Doesn't matter what I try, it won't accept CD2.
Says something like being unable to mount it.
I checked the CD and it should be fine, though.
Any ideas?
This is my first Linux installation, so I don't know much about it yet. Thanks in advance
How do you know CD2 is not defective? Try to put it in a Windows machine if you have any available, you shoud see the files. You may have to burn it again, if the machine sees CD1, it should see CD 2, 3, etc.
So the problem isn't solved.... and you find a bypass. Lucky you!!!!
I have got the same problem you had.
Cd1 is installed correctly, after a reboot linux hangs (exactly after the point the HAL daemon is started). Then I have rebooted Linux and I have ejected CD1, after that SUSE 10 started including X Windows with the installation menu. And then, the same problem, it asks for CD2 and after putting the CD in, the cd rom is spinning. After a minute (or 2) my whole system hangs. So I cannot continue the installation proces from CD 2.
my cd player and disk 2 are fine.
What I have discovered is that the CD rom at the install step during installation of cd1 is in another way mounted than disk 2.... (checked in fstab)
Further: when the installation gui is asking for disk 2 and i put another cd in. the computer hangs as well. So in my opiniion it has nothing to do with the disks...
Linux is fun when it works.... but before it works it is sometimes a pain.....
I was seeing this problem too, I had more notes to report though, maybe due to the inability of the machine to mount the media.
First off, I did an upgrade not an install of 9.3 to 10 OSS, this worked ok, but i had a 60gig drive I wanted to put in and a nice new Pioneer DVD_RW, so cheap now, not worth buying a CD_RW anymore, all worked fine but I wanted to do it properly.
Righto.
I did the inbuilt media check, that passed ok.
I started the install, selected all the goodies I wanted.
Started install.
Prompt to install CD2, unable to mount it, hmm puzzled, I rebooted the machine and ran the built in media checker again on both 1 & 2, both are fine, so i restarted the install, fails at the same point, now the error messages I got to see suggested that the kernel could not use the processor, (AMD 1600 Sempron it think) suggested it could not detect the mulitplier frequency or similar, there was a lot of messages.
I shall try the thing with regards being the primary on IDE2, but i think thats how i already set it up.
I'm running a 1600 AMD cpu
60gig IBM Deskstar multiple partitions, ie /, /boot, /user
4 gig IDE disk formatted as SWAP
64meg Nvidia graphic card
If i suss this I shall post something up, I've not managed the network install and don't intend to pursue this either.
Rgds to all
Simon
Further to this, I have checked the drive, it is definitely set to master drive, it's the only device on that channel, the yast error I'm getting is
"Package WindowMaker 0.92.0-5.i586" was not found in the medium.
Err 10251 InstSrc:E_skip_media
The other messages appear when it has rebooted and there is no X running, it is at a login screen of very low resolution and in the corner is a term window with a list of stuff including some of what i wrote above.
I cannot underestand why it upgraded me ok but won't install me, maybe I downloaded the wrong versions, I maybe totally wrong but the i386 version is for all of the normal PC range isn't it, if not I'm facing more poxy torrent fun
More to add to this, not sure if it is relevant, but when I go back to the installation mode again, and check the list, the partition table is all sort of messed up, I have on 60gig drive which i intended to partition and a small 4gig drive which i intend to use for swap, but my partitions have all been changed and a swap partition is being created on the main drive, now I don't know for sure but feel this could be part of my problem, strange I never had any issues with the 9.3 version and the only difference here is the partitions are that much larger.
Blimey i was puzzled before now I'm really stuffed........................

I had the same problem, not being able to continue with CD2.
WORKAROUND:
CD1 isn't unmounted correctly. I got around it by putting CD1 in my second CD drive. At the point where it asks for CD2, the 'eject' button works and I can go ahead and install the rest of the instalation using my first CD drive.
I've been thinking on this today, and i thought why did you put a DVD drive in your Linux box?
So you could take advantage of the magazine distros you muppet was the worrying reply, well I found a copy of version 10 on Linux format cover disk, chucked it in, it booted and it appears to be installing too, wonder if the partitions are as i set them, I started worrying that novell were trying to do a microshaft on me ;-)
Keep you posted.
I'm also peeved that I downloaded the OSS iso then ruined them, downloaded again then burnt them to disk, had trouble, and I had the DVD there all the naffin time!!

I was stuck at this very same point. Thinking that CD2 was bad, I downloaded it again from the Internet and burned it again - same problem. Then I downloaded it again from a different server and was going to burn a third copy of the CD 2 when I read your message.
Just the words, "CD1 isn't unmounted correctly" made me think. I had the "bad" CD2 in there that it would not recognize. I had been ejecting the CD by using the button on the drive. When I read your message I ejected the "bad" CD2 by using the Eject button on the screen in Yast - then re-inserted the CD2 and everything was just fine.
