Thumbs down OpenSuse 10.2 fails with Geforce 6600 FX

Just tried OpenSuse 10.2 and it fails. Instead of my installed Geforce 6600 FX card it recognized Geforce 6600 GT!! YAST did not give me any option to change this setting. In consequence grafical display is spoilt and I cannot use the system.

This must be my tenth successless attempt to bring a Linux running with satisfying results (except for Knoppix which is not very useful for me) - and I do count among some people as computer expert. Very interesting! Most of the systems fail due to grafic card problems and they don't give any advice or tools to setup parameters.

Actually I had expected more of Suse. Should I waste the time and try Ubuntu?

Question 6600 Fx?

I pulled up a list of supported nVidia GPU's and I don't see a video card called 6600 FX. Perhaps you don't know what card you have or it is simply not supported. I suggest you contact nVidia and ask about support for your video card.

The FX series are all 5xxx level cards. Some manufacturers claim to be producing a FX6600, but it is a name chosen for advertising reasons, not a valid NVIDIA GPU. In any event, the solution is to install the card in openSUSE using any driver that works out of the box. Then, install the unified driver from NVIDIA. You can start here:

Thanks, I don't have the energy to spend another useless nights investigating. I will happily return to Windows which mysteriously supports all of my wild hardware. I'll give it another try next year, wondering if I will live long enough to see a Linux installation rendering something useful. - Just tried a Kubuntu 6.10 created from the Chip-DVD. It failed installing after 85% of the software. Number 11 ..

Many distros offer Live CD versions. You might want to go that route to get a preview of how your machine will function with a particular distro

I know Nvidia products, and SuSE is correct it is a 6600GT. Whoever labeled your card FX6600 just made that up.

read some stuff, ask questions before flamming Linux for your ignorance/bad luck in the matter.
