open suse => slow cd-drive

i installed open suse today* and am very, very satisfied until now. just one problem quite disturbing since i copy my backups back on disc: the cd-drives response is very bad. for a 54mb folder it first said "66 days left" but the cd-drive starts to work after maybe 20-30 seconds. at some occasions copying one full cd took 15 minutes. how do i fix that problem?

CDRW: LG GCE-8481B-R 48x24x48, Retail

best regards

on console: su
hdparm /dev/"your cdrom"
and check if DMA is enabled.

refreshing the workplace, konqueror crashed for the first time after the new installation. motivating... is there another way to check if dma is activated? this is my console results:
Code:
oli@linux:~> su hdparm /dev/hdc
su: user hdparm nonexistant
oli@linux:~> su oli /dev/hdc
Password:
bash: /dev/hcd: file or folder not found
oli@linux:~> hdparm /dev/hdc
bash: hdparm: command not found
regards

find out which device is your cdrom unit:
have a look at /var/log/boot.msg. You can also type dmsg on console.

on console:
su (hit enter)
then there occurs "passwd": (enter the password for "root")

hdparm /dev/hda (if cdrom is hda)
hdparm /dev/hdc (if cdrom is hdc) and so on

thank you for another answer! in boot.msg i found that:
Code:
<6>VP_IDE: VIA vt8235 (rev 00) IDE UDMA133 controller on pci0000:00:11.1
<6>    ide0: BM-DMA at 0xe400-0xe407, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
<6>    ide1: BM-DMA at 0xe408-0xe40f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:pio
so i was unsure whether hda or hdc was my cd-drive. i tried "dsmg":
Code:
oli@linux:~> dmsg
bash: dmsg: command not found
okay, so i did it the other way and there was some data, i assume, hda is my cd-drive?:
Code:
oli@linux:~> su
Password:
linux:/home/oli # hdparm /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 HDIO_GETGEO failed: Invalid argument

/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 IO_support   =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma    =  1 (on)
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    = 256 (on)
 geometry     = 65535/16/63, sectors = 78165360, start = 0

Your HDD is /dev/hda and /dev/hdc is yor cdrom drive.

DMA is turned on for /dev/hdc.

Did you have a look in /var/log/warn for errors which belong to the cdrom drive.
