Your instructions were correct, my inability to follow them was the problem. Thanks a lot bottled leaf. Helpful people like you take the fear out of converting.
just make sure that you have installed "kernel-source" from Yast before you do it or it will error out. Also make sure you backup your xorg.conf file as I've found that to be a life saver when something goes wrong and X wont start.
After you've typed init 3 and logged in as root make sure you first:
>cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.backup
Then if it wont start up again, chose failsafe boot and when at terminal, do the opposite to restore previous X settings.
after i installed the nvidia drivers through yast like the nvidia site said so:
YaST -> Software -> Change installation Source -> Add
Protocol: HTTP
Server Name: : download.nvidia.com
Directory on Server: /opensuse/10.2
to add the NVIDIA ftp server as additional installation source.
Now use
YaST -> Software -> Install and Delete Software
to install the NVIDIA driver. Select the following packages:
x11-video-nvidia
nvidia-gfx-kmp-"kernel-flavor"
"kernel-flavor" depends on your installed kernel. Check with
"uname -r" for installed default/smp/bigsmp kernel. Use "sax2 -r"
for X.Org configuration.
^^^^^ i did all that except for sax2 -r
in which i got sax2: command not found
but i was like whatever and i restarted and now im in text mode
so when i try to start x server when startx
i get an error
Fatal Server Error:
no screens found
X10: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by user) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (o known processed) with 0 events remaining.
I know everything works for you now, but just out of curiosity when you changed the installation source and installed the NVIDIA drivers trough YaST2, were you in init 3 ? or init 5?
