I used version 3.16.7. Because there exists a "desktop" type pre-config.

Then I did "make nconfig" twice (closed terminal by accident in between). To give an example of the difficulties of allnoconfig:
How would you know to activate a function:
Device Drivers - Character Devices - TPM Hardware Support - TPM Hardware Support 1.2 (Atmel)

Well, if it's preselected, and named "security chip", then you (maybe) google your computer. To find out it posseses the Atmel 97SC3203 chip. Whatever that piece of wonder or junk might be. But now I have a driver built-in.

I found out that my oldconfig was for "Intel Pentium-Pro", and not "Intel Core 2".

To find the correct modules it is good to type "lsmod" to get an idea what's going on.

Some more detailed information I found through this guide:
http://www.linuxtopia.org/online_boo...html#id2568259

And hwinfo of course.

Basically one deactivates a myriad of funcions in good faith. And you leave another useless myriad active, because you will never know what it is, or won't find time to read the masses of help text/do google research.

Now "make bzImage modules -j2" is running through.

Plain make will build the image and modules. See README in kernel source directory for make targets.

I messed up full scale.

together with the bad partitioning the not working new kernel overwrote parts of the old configuration (exact same version).

It was not possible for me with much research to repair Grub2 config even with UBCD, SRD, USB bootable OpenSuseLive, chroot, btrfs, gparted, etc.

So I made my backup, some BIOS updating at the occasion, Windows partition resizing.

Now I have sensible partitioning, just downloading Slackware 14.1 64x.
