Unhappy newbie

hi guys,

i want to install suse linux on my old pc. right now it has windows 95, like i said-old, and has a pentium 2 processor. it does not have a live internet connection. i was in the process of installing the driver for the new ethernet port i purchased, but i think when i was backing up old files and deleting useless file, i may have inadvertently deleted a non-useless file. i chose to go ahead and install suse and then install the driver. i also intend on keeping this box a linux box. i dont not want to keep it as a dual machine, running both linux and windows; i just want it as a linux box.

i downloaded suse10 from one of the mirror sites. when i run it on my pc and try the installation, it gets stuck at ...

loading piix

it will not move from that point, like i said-stuck
what is wrong, what should i do

thanks in advance

(could you maybe capitalize the first letter in sentences, and use the odd apostrophe... makes it easier to read your posts; thank you.)

... wait a minute: you were in the process of installing the driver in windows 95??? Then you went ahead and installed suse??

You don't want to keep it a dual boot machine - did you try to install suse in dual boot configuration with windows 95? Why not just get rid of windows and install SUSE?

You sound confused...

Loading PIIX ... does it say [OK] or [FAIL] or nothing?
[PIIX: PCI IDE/ISA Xcelerator (Intel IC)]
... after that it tries to read the IDE drives.

You have been fiddling about inside there - try reseating the IDE cables.

Caveat: PII (just the desktop PII, not the Xeon or pro version?) We're talking a c. 1995 box here - your main limitation will probably be RAM. I have found that full-size recent distros do not install well to old boxes.

I would suggest you try another distro (smaller maybe, something with a live version).

sounds like a case for Damn Small Linux. That would be great for a Pentium 2

It's a live cd as well, so you can try it before installing
