Newbie – Access Rights Control

When setting up new accounts using the YaST, I select the default as given by YaST.
But unable to understand the following:

1. e.g. “My_Documents” (folder) was given write access.
The sub-folder “Document1” (folder) was givern write access.
The sub-folder “Document2” (folder) was NOT given write acces.
Why is this so?

2. How to change the access rights while in KDE.

3. How do change the acces rigths while in shell.
I think it is something like “chmod 666 Document2” , correct?

Many thanks in advance for the advise.

->1. I don't know!

->2. Open the Konqueror, right click on the file/folder you would like to change, select the tab 'Permissions' and change the settings.

->3. Yes, give 4 for read, 2 for write and 1 for execute and sum them up. 666 gives read and write access to all users (first digit for owner, second for group, third for the world). To change the ownership, use chown or chgrp resp. Use the option -R (recursive) to change perissions in subdirectories also.

Don't log in as superuser (might not work anyway), just open konqueror in super user mode:

KDE menu -> system -> File Manager -> File Manager-Super User Mode

or

KDE menu -> Run Command -> kdesu konqueror

You may use the command kdesu also from console to open any K application with root permissions.
