I'm trying to get my suse 9.1 to print to my network printer which is a HP all-in-one PSC 2500. When I go to YaST and try adding a new printer it see's the printer no problem, even has a driver built-in (somewhere) for my PSC 2500 but when i've selected all this it asks me to put in a passwork and username to log in to the "printing system". I've tried my root user and also my normal login and password and it says wrong password or username. Does anyone know what password it's asking me for? my printer doesn't have any password configuration so it's gotta be something in my suse.
I'm using cups, if that helps,
Assuming you're using CUPS, on 9.1 SuSE defaults to no password. Some security thing. So you need to add your user name via the command line. As root do:
lppassword -a <your_username>
I used root for my username and it then asks for the password.
After that you should be able to go back to the original attempt and enter the name/password you chose and complete the setup.

Ooops. sorry for the typo.
My understanding is the change is a security matter. Unfortunately SuSE puts the notice of the change in a dialog that pops up when you're nearing the end of the installation and who ever reads or remembers those things? The real challenge is to remember this when you update CUPS or reinstall SuSE.

The funny thing is that I didn't have to do this the last time I installed SuSE 9.1 But then this time around I installed from the DVD - last time I installed from the FTP server. I'm beginning to think there's a difference in the setup processes of the two procedures.
Here's something else I had to do. My printer is hung off a small USB print server, which has its own IP address. Instead of setting this up as a remote printer using TCP/IP, I had to set it up as a remote LPR printer. Once I did this, I was able to print to it with no problems.
Interesting. The real insteresting thing is that I learned this by going to the print server manufacturer's web site and looking it up in the web-based user's manual.
