I don't know why the word count utility would be involved in booting SuSE. You should be able to restore that by using the software package installer in YaST.
I believe that any problems booting your system are due to other problems.
Aparently some init scripts use wc and were failing because of that.
I just copied the binary from an ubuntu live CD and it worked. ... I got the system to boot and reduced the number of errors but still it is not booting reliably.
I made a repair with the suse 10.1 install DVD and that also helped boot most of the applications. I can now at least access all services in my server but commands such as vi, grep, etc are not working ...
I am now backing up all application data and plan to upgrade to an Ubuntu server 10.10.
