Hi Gang! Hope that all is well with all of my fellow Linux enthusiasts. :-))
Simple question for you guys : I have just successfully finished a completely new installation of SUSE Linux 9.3 Professional. Everything seems to be working very, very well, and I wanted to post some notes about my recent experience with re-compiling and using the newest version of the Xine video/multimedia player. I thought some folks might be able to learn just a bit from my own experience. I stumbled across some *interesting* KDE behavior, and I thought some of you might be interested in reading what took place with me.
I am curious to know what would be the best way of sharing this info to this website. I have made a simple step-by-step text file diary of my xine/multimedia re-compiling experience, and I didn't know if there was a way of attaching this text file to a regular post, or if it's just OK to go ahead and post all the contents of my text file within a regular message post.
SUSE Pro 9.3 is looking mighty fine so far, and I am looking forward to seeing many more of you take the plunge for a complete install or upgrade.
And thanks for any suggestions concerning the posting of my xine experience. Since there are likely to be many new discoveries about the new SUSE 9.3, I want to find out the best and/or most effective way of posting what I have seen, as well as be informed about the experiences the rest of you are having. Thanks!
I would certainly like to post my very down-to-earth, step-by-step recent experience with re-compiling Xine on my new SUSE 9.3 Pro installation.
Question : As I indicated in my original post, do you think it would be OK if I were to just put all the info in my *.txt file within a regular post? For very experienced sys admin types, my experiences may seem trivial. But I have found that there are many "power users" who would like to read a simple, straightforward description of what one user (such as myself) went through in order to solve a particular problem. Alternatively, perhaps my info would help more folks if I posted it somewhere else (I'm not all that familiar with the best way to do things around here).
One of the things I REALLY have appreciated about this particular website is that there are a LOT of very knowledgeable and experienced users who are willing to share their info with others. It's very rare that someone doesn't know some important part about solving a pesky problem. Thus, I would only want to offer my experience in order that someone else would benefit from it. In the crazy world of computers, there are always TONS of highly complicated, very confusing "explanations" that, IMHO, tend to hurt a lot more than they help.
Anywho, thanks for your reply. And if you might know the best place for me to post my notes, be it within a regular post or elsewhere, I'd certainly appreciate any suggestions you might have.
I've been using the following web site "http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/xine/" to get xine updated for viewing commercial DVD movies. Its simple and provides all the SuSE RPMs that you need. You can perform the complete task with YaST.
Thanks a lot for the link; I'll certainly store it for future use. Any time we can let YaST do the work of retrieval and installation would certainly seem like the easiest and most stable way of doing things.
And, for those that don't know any better, there's always the exciting "brute force" method I've used with both 9.0 and 9.3. :-))
Posting your comments in a regular post is A-OK, however, keep in mind that posts are sorted in date order, so it's possible that over time, a regular post will be pushed down the list pretty far. However, since tutorials can have extended useful lifespans, LQ also offers the LQ Answers (aka LQ Tutorials) Tutorials are listed first in any Search results, and are organized differently than regular posts. Personally, I think tutorials fit better in the Answers section than they do in the forums. If/when you have something you think would be of interest, please submit it. You'll never know how many folks you might be helping out -- J.W.
