Mulitcast not going out of the box

I get a hard time trying to run multicast on SuSE 10.0 (haven't tried other SuSE versions). Basically, it does not get out of the box. I have 5 machines and only one running SuSE 10.0. I configure the same route and use the same very simple multicast server program written in C. I use ping on each machine to see who's responding on 224.9.9.4. All other 4 machines are seeing each other (i.e. they get replies from all others to the ping on 224.9.9.4) but can't see the SuSE box. The SuSE 10.0 machine sees the others, but can't be seen by any other.

The other machines are: kubuntu 5.10 and home-brewed Linux systems.

No firewall is running on the SuSE box. When the SuSE box runs the Knoppix live CD it does not work either. But when it runs the LFS (Linux From Scratch) Live CD it works. So the problem is not with the network card on that machine.

Has anyone got problems trying to run multicast on a SuSE (10.0) box ?

Any help appreciated.
