i have a slight issue with my recently installed mplayerplugin.
(running suse10.0 and Firefix 1.5 in kde).

Previously, i could not get any news-related videos to play at websites like
http://news.yahoo.com
I asked around, and the solution was to install the mplayerplugin. it works great!

but now there is a side effect.
Whenever i am surfing and click on a Link to a .wmv file, the file
automatically starts to open within my firefox browser window!

Previously, i would get a window that asked if i wanted to Play it (in Kaffeine) or just save it.

but not anymore. Now my whole browser stalls (maybe 12 seconds) while it attempts to start playing the file. Not a good thing.

Whats Interesting is that this problem only happens for .wmv files.
For mpg's, mov's, mp3's, & avi's files, it acts normal (i get the window popup asking if i want Kaffeine, etc).

Is there a way i can disassociate .WMVs from opening in Firefox? i checked the plugins section with Firefox, but i didnt see any listing for the WMV type.

Just wondering if anyone ever had the same problem.

This might not be the most elegant solution, but I use the Firefox add-on MediaPlayerConnectivity. It allows you to associate any player to any media type. Plus, it can prevent WMV files from loading automatically.

A not-so-Elegant Solution is better than no-solution!!

what version of Firefox are you using it with?

I'm using 1.5, but it's compatible with 1.0 and on.

Is there a program i can use to play any of the "Flash" filetypes?

Glad it's working for you. As for Flash, what processor are you using (x86, 64 bit, MacPPC, etc.)? The reason I ask is that there is a native FlashPlayer with a plugin for Firefox, but it only works on 32-bit systems. For AMD64 and PPC, the Flash options are much more limited.

Well, im running the 32bit version of Suse10.0 on a 64bit Pentium4.

You should have no problem at all running Flash 7 and the Flash 7 Firefox plugin. Therefore, you won't need MediaPlayerConnectivity to control embedded Flash. You can install it using Synaptic or apt-get -- whatever you prefer.
