Mic problem in Suse 10.2

I have HP Compaq nc8230, with 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller.

I can record sound using the built-in mic, but the problem is when I use an external mic, I can't.

How can I configure KMix to take input from the external mic ?

The only suggestions I might have is first, be sure the external mic is working then go to your Kmix input controls and mute mic and try turning on line in or aux and of course make sure "capture" is on. Another hint is they say if you get to the point you can hear your mic sounds through your speaker you can record if the controls are set right
