I'm trying to perform a new install of SuSe 10.0 on a system with 4 IDE drives. I want to use the RAID driver to set up both RAID0 and RAID1 partitions. The I want to use LVM to manage the space.

I have done this on Fedora Core and it works. However, when I try this during the Suse install, I cannot fgure out how. After I create a couple of partitions of type Linux RAID, I go to the RAID create screen and it lets me create md0. In this screen, it gives me the option to format or not to format the new RAID volume md0. However, it does not give me the option to make it an LVM physical volume so that I can assign it to a volume group.

Am I missing a step somewhere or is this not possible during install with SuSE?

AFAIK, you should first create a lvg, then create the RAID partitions using lv(s).

In the end, I gave up on putting the O/S under LVM/RAID. What I really wanted was to put some audio files and photos under RAID1 and some video under RAID0.

So, I installed linux in a partition by itself and left several other partitions unused. After the install, I used mdadm to create a md0 and md1. I then used pvcreate to make them PVs for LVM. From that point on, it was the usual create VGs and LVs and install file systems.

What you suggested seems backwards from this process (LVM first, then RAID creation).
