Unhappy Internet connection sharing on SuSe 9.1 personal ?

Hello everyone,

For last 4 weeks I am reading through almost every posts on this site related to internet connection sharing. I am trying to use my Linux Box as a gateway for my windows 98 box. modem is installed on linux box and both PC are connected using crossover cable on NIC. even though I tried different suggestion to make this happen nothing helped and this is where I am.

I can see the window drives from my linux box using samba. but I cannot ping my windows PC from linux Box. add to my confusion I cannot even ping my isp or a website like yahoo as I always get the message unknown host but my internet connection works. I had tried turning the firewall on linux on/off . also tried different options on firewall set up under etc/system configuration in Yast

I can ping my linux PC from my windows box but I do not see linux box.

I had set the IP address on linux as 192.168.1.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 with IP forwarding ?
I had set the IP address on windows as 192.268.1.2 subnet 255.255.255.0 tried selecting linux box as default gateway
(my linux box is a dual boot system with Win98 and ICS works with out any problem through windows)

now what I am seeking help: has any one using SuSe had achieved what I am trying to /
Do I really have to use NAT , Iptables, and masquedering to achieve this. can I use the built in features on Suse 9.1 to achieve this other than going too much into "editing" " recompiling" and all those good stuff always discussed in our site. The issue I see is when I try to follow instructions for a different distribution on setting this up my suse, wont even respond to 95% of command line instruction I give. !!!!( may be I am too new to command Suse)

All your helps are appreciated in an effort to learn something new everyday

You will need a firewall application to set this up,the one that comes with suse or guarddog for kde or firestarter for gnome.

I do have Suse Firewall2 running. Is that what you mean. But why should I need one. If I prefer not to use it ?

Post /etc/iptables.conf
because you need NAT (a.k.a. IP-masquerading) to share the connection

Hello comprookie2000,
Thanks for the reply but I cannot locate /etc/iptables.conf did I miss something in package installation or looking at wrong location ? please advice.

Update: now I found the way how I can see my linux box does the ping. So I can ping my windows PC and internet cool but still no hope in connection sharing.

configure it in YAST. Find the firewall section.

I know its too much to ask but can you be little more specific in which area in Yast I will have to focus getting the set up right. Should I choose IP forwarding =yes

Download this GUIDE
Then look here under Firewalling
You want to enable ip_forwarding and NAT (a.k.a. IP-masquerading)
hope that helps
