Installed 10.0; GUI interface to X server not found?

Hey all,

I'm VERY new to linux and I just installed 10.0 for a second time now. After I shut down the comp and come back to it the folowing day (each time I've done this) it gives me an error message saying that the GUI interface cannot be found or the x server cannot be found and all I get is the loading screen with all the green "done's" on it. So i log in like it says and put in the password and it says "have a lot of fun..." and just sits there. I have no idea what's going on or how to fix this problem. Can anyone help me or at least tell me what's wrong? Thanks in advance!

after you login try 'startx' or 'startkde'.
if that loads but exits, with errors, post the output of 'grep (EE) /var/log/Xorg.log.0'

Ok well I tried the first 2 commands and they did not start. I then tried "/var/log...." and it said that access was denied. I then tried the su function and that still didn't work. I went into mc and tried to see if there was anyway I could find the corrupt file. I found it with no problem b/c of * next to it but that didn't do me any good. I've decided to go ahead and reinstall for a thrid time. Is there anyway to figure out what's causing this problem to happen? If so, can I stop it from doing it again?

Thanks again!!

i dont know if thats the exact file name for X.. whats the output of 'ls -l /var/log'?
if 'su' then root password didnt work then try 'sudo su' or 'sudo [command], entering your own user password.
what was the output of the two commands that 'did not start'? we'll need to see output of what youv done to know whats going wrong.

have you already reinstalled? i dont think you need to.
are you choosing complete install? or are you manually selecting (or unselecting) programs to install? if youv done complete installs, im sure its just something wrong with your monitor or video card selection during install, which we can fix if you give us some info... have patience! we'll help you

Wow thank you so much for responding! I haven't reinstalled yet, I actually took the cd out and was about to put it in last night but something told me to wait so I did.

The output of the log basically said the same thing. It said something like (and I'll get the exact wording when I get home tonight), "X (something) not found." and then my monitor blinked and went back to the same exact screen.

Here's the weird thing though: When the computer starts and I get this error msg it's all white and blue and a prompt asks me to view the "X terminal file" or something along that. I select yes and it gives a paragraph of information that I do not know what to do with. The I select go back and it says "X terminal cannot start/has been disabled." And then I can't get to my dektop or anything.

I hope you guys can help me! Thank you for being so patient and helping me through this. I really want to use linux but man this is getting to me. I won't give up though.

Dave

we'll wait till you have the log for us to post so we can look into it. what do you mean went back to the same screen? after booting to linux does it load into a black and white console screen with just text? and is this the screen it goes back to after failing?

the 'white and blue' makes it seem like its not booting directly to the console but the GUI, correct?

Well it goes back to the screen with the white and blue prompt. How do I post a log of this? Because I ahve to use my laptop to go on the internet and post on here? Should I copy everything down and post it on here for ya?

The black and white console pops up and instructs me to log in. So I log in and then it says "have a fun time...." and just sits there.

check in the /var/log/ folder for an X log or dmesg file.. copy and paste those to another fat32 partition or floppy disk, or however you need to, and post those files here please

Ok I tried using accessing the log and it said that permission was denied. Sorry for the delayed response time, I've been out running around town. I'll try posting the log tonight. Thank you so much again for your help!

Nope everytime I try and access the log through the "/var/log...." command it says that permission is denied. I've tried using su and other ways to log in but I can't. Is there another way?

whats the output of 'ls -l /var/log/'?
you tried 'su' then 'cat /var/log/fileName' with the appropriate filename? if it still gives you permission denied then we have a problem
