install laptop wireless card? just upgraded to 10.2
Hello,
I just upgraded from suse 10.0 to openSuse 10.2. Everything seems smooth, however I don't know how to reinstall my dlink wireless card to my laptop. A light on the card seems to be blinking, but I am unable to see it in the "Network Card Configuration Overview". I do see the internal wireless there (didn't before).
If I start KWiFiManager to see what networks are around, the card picture icon is crossed out and no networks are found.
Any idea on how I can get this D-Link AirPlus DWL-G650 working again in my suse?
See if the device is actually working before changing what you use.
Try "/sbin/ifconfig" which will tell you if it has an IP address.
Try "sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan" to see if the device is detecting APs.
If the above are ok, to to YaST2 -> network -> interfaces and see if you need to supply more information there. Remember the advanced dropdown list at the bottom of the page after selecting the interface and clicking on edit. That is where you can check if the proper driver is being used, and enter the IP & gateway address or select DHCP.
Since your wireless light is blinking, the wireless device was probably updated along with the kernel.
I've got a D-Link wireless card and use the MadWifi drivers (www.Madwifi.org). I installed and configured the driver through Yast. The biggest challenge was remembering my router settings for the card configuration.
Hey all,
Thanks for the great feedback. For kicks, I backed up my data and did a clean install from the DVD. Same issue (but way more hard drive space now). I will give madwifi a try first. It may just take me a small while as I suck at installing from source. Regarding that, when I download the source file, do I need to find a place for it and it install/make it there, or can I install from my download folder, and everything will go where it needs to (not my download folder)? If this does not work, ndiswrapper is also incuded through yast.
Madwifi has OpenSUSE packages that you can install from YAST. That's what I did. There was no compiling needed.
Go to this page for some brief instructions for installing the drivers.
I may be able to help with instructions on configuring the card and setting up Knetwork Manager if you need more instructions. My biggest frustration was translating my router's settings, which used one set of terms, to the terms used by the card configuration in YAST -- this was so I could access my WEP-encrypted home network.
