increase the /home direction by mounting another large usb disk

Dear friends:
My home directory is used for numerical computation and it is almost out of space. I want to add a large usb disk to the pc and increse the space of the /home directory.
Could you please give me some suggestions.

would be nice to give more details, like the OS you use, the filesystem type (both home and usb device). LVM is in use or other things to know...

How active is the data ?. I would think USB (buffering) would be an issue for large data sets. Mount another disk on an internal bus would be my preference.
